Separating the individual from their problems
Narrative Therapy focuses on validating the lived experience of clients. It empowers clients to step into their power as an authority on their own life and values.
Mental health professionals who employ Narrative Therapy help clients find their voice and live in a way that is fully authentic. Individuals find relief from needing to place blame on others or themselves.
Foundations of Narrative Therapy
1) Narrative therapy respects the individual agency of each client. Client's are seen as whole, not lacking, deficient, or defective.
2) Narrative therapy sees the individual as an expert on their lived experience. It is believed that clients have the ability to both recognize areas requiring change and to implement those changes.
3) Narrative therapy does not blame the individual for the challenges they face. People are separated from their problems and encouraged to view dysfunctional patterns as areas to work on versus places to assign blame.
