Understanding and overcoming addiction
Addictions are patterns of thought and behavior which can, when in excess, negatively impact relationships, physical and mental health, finances and one's work life. Addictions can include substances like alcohol, drugs, food or cigarettes, or activities like self-harm, shopping, work, relationships or sex. Individuals experiencing addiction may feel a sense of emotional instability alternating with a strong drive to engage in their addictive behavior regardless of the consequences.
If you or someone you care about is living under the burden of an addiction, consider discussing your concerns with a therapist. According to the Addiction Center, almost 21 million Americans have at least one addiction, yet only 10% of them receive treatment. Addiction and substance abuse can take many forms, but there is hope and recovery is possible. Discussing how your addiction is impacting your life is the first step to charting a course for recovery. This may include outpatient therapy or a referral for a more formal assessment or inpatient recovery center.
